In a bid to ease a growing problem, the Food and Drug Administration is now considering erectile dysfunction medications, which are commonly known as Viagra.
“It’s not unusual to experience an erection that lasts more than 4 hours,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “These drugs help men who have erectile dysfunction achieve and maintain their erection for as long as possible.”
Viagra, also known by its generic name sildenafil, is the first approved medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is sold by the generic drug companies, which include Eli Lilly and ICOS, the same companies that developed and market Viagra for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, or PAH.
“It’s a pretty standard treatment for erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Andrew W. Leven, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “I’m not sure if the FDA is interested in Viagra, but I think it’s a good idea to do some clinical testing in order to see what the potential side effects are.”
A clinical trial conducted by the FDA in December found that men who took Viagra were nearly twice as likely to have erectile dysfunction than those who did not take the drug, a conclusion that was later bolstered by a subsequent study. The drug, approved in 1998, was found to have no apparent benefit.
Viagra, sold by Pfizer as the first of its kind, contains sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. Viagra works by relaxing blood vessels, which allows the penis to enlarge, helping men to achieve and maintain an erection. The drugs are not typically recommended for use before a man’s 30-day window of sexual activity, but a woman’s age or health is a factor in determining their risk of having erectile dysfunction.
Viagra can be taken with or without food. The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the use of Viagra on women. That is a requirement for approval by the FDA, which requires that a woman have sex within 30 days of the first sexual activity of her own age, although a woman’s risk may be reduced if the medication is taken at the same time, said Dr. Anderson, chief of urology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
There is also some evidence that the drug does not cause sexual dysfunction in women. For example, in one study, women taking the drug reported a decrease in libido, or sexual satisfaction, and sexual difficulty.
Viagra is not approved for use in women. In June, the FDA announced it would expand the use of Viagra to women.
